Laila the Crisp, Clean Natural Floral Fragrance by Designer Geir Ness of Norway

Did you know that perfumes and scents are selected like a cascade of fabric styles and textures used by fashion designers? A fragrance designer employs a similar technique using a variety of exotic natural notes usually handpicked and gathered in the form of flowers and herbs. Geir Ness of Norway is the Scandinavian countries first fragrance designer making him famous for his sense of smell, his knack for choosing fragrant wildflowers and his ability to appeal to our most delicate layer of senses. His signature scent, “Laila” named for his mother and his self-named, Geir for men, has made this Norwegian bred scent artist sought the world over.

While a perfume is more than the sum, of its parts an accord is a combination of two or more different materials that create a novel effect that smells very different from the materials experienced on their own. The personality of a fragrance is determined by its basic accord. For instance, the accord between patchouli and a cotton candy note gives many popular perfumes their distinctive character.

Geir began his journey into design while masking as a promotional fragrance model on weekends giving him added pleasure and golden memories of the many times that his mom took him into Norway’s mountains where they would pick wildflowers. Developing the character of a smell or defining the idea was a talent that Geir soon discovered came quite natural to him. In our 15 Minute interview the designer shared his story of how although he spoke little English he would go door to door standing on the streets to put to test his floral combinations and to get an idea of the kind of scents that consumers were attracted to. The responses were phenomenal.

Floralcy is a jargon term meaning that a fragrance has a floral element or a floral character. Sometimes it means an abstract floral sensation that does not refer to any one flower in particular. Geir had a mentor who specialized in perfumery and who advised him to look for scents that he liked. While it took years to perfect formulas and various combinations, the sight of the fragrant wildflowers of his childhood were the first images that crossed his mind. In the case of Laila, a touch of Watermelon and a strong well scented organic Lavender is used giving the wildflowers a radiant and bright effect leaving a smooth, delicate, yet vital scent to be enjoyed long after the day becomes night. Laila introduces a natural, clean, crisp, fresh scent and uses dimethicone, which unlike mineral oils does not clog the pores allowing the skin to breathe. It is the use of dimethicone, which makes a difference in how creams and lotions are absorbed through the layers of the skin.

After secretly copying his mom’s signature and with the name silk-screened onto the bottle, on Mother’s Day, Geir presented Laila to the one person who truly had inspired its beginnings.

The beautifully crafted collection of Laila perfume, lotions, body and skin care lines as well as its male counterpart Geir, can be found exclusively at Nordstrom’s and selected boutiques. A new fragrance will take its place alongside the Geir and Laila scents by the end of this summer, beginning fall 2016 and will take Geir Ness’ lavish skin care and fragrance products into international markets outside of Nordstrom giving him additional territories to lay claim to.
