The idea that young girls who have had to move through unfortunate circumstances and insurmountable odds can be trained to be leaders and not followers in today’s times, in some ways, is not unheard of; however, Afam Onyema, co-founder of GEANCO, doesn’t just think young girls are capable of standing firm in future leadership positions, but they can excel in them. With a strong focus on health and education services in Nigeria, Onyema is not just well read. Still, as a graduate of Harvard and Stanford Law School, he is brilliant in developing meaningful paths aligned with a strong sense of purpose from beginning to end. GEANCO, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to providing health and education services in Nigeria. It focuses on medical missions, surgical interventions, maternal health programs, and scholarships for young girls. The organization partners with major institutions and celebrities to bring critical healthcare and educational opportunities to underserved communities in Nigeria. Onyema turned down a traditional legal career to focus on humanitarian work and has worked intentionally to bring GEANCO to the top of the list of thriving organizations out of Nigeria.
