Many in this world may be known as a wonder and after meeting, actor, performer, and singer Linda Purl could very well be one of them. Some of you may remember her as the girlfriend of Happy Days Ron Howard. Yes, and she is a wonder to be here and telling a very humanistic tale about the life of a mother who grappled with various aspects of mental illness through the eyes of a child. To say that this is a not-so-pretty subject directed by Anson Williams and written by Sharon Scott Williams would be an understatement, however, to say that truth stands in its own light is not a bad way to describe the ugly, pretty things. Crazy Mama is one such ugly pretty truth. Heralding for the cause of numbers as told by many who suffer from some form of mental illness. In top tier Linda Purl handles with a bear hand a sixteen-character more forceful than a moving tour, this play is a testament to the steely resilience of human hearts beaming with the hope of better days and better times. Crazy Mama playing at the Rubicon Theater Company starring Linda Purl is set to run from March 26th -to April 6, 2025. Sharon Scott Williams lets her pen, and the play tells a story through the embodiment of mental illness filtered by the direction of Anson Williams. The story begins when a child rushes home after school a few days after her eighth birthday to get the last slice of cake. When she arrives home to have a delightful moment of sweets her innocence is splattered when she witnesses her mother having a full-on knife-wielding psychotic episode. As she looks closer at the situation the sheriff yells out “Your mama is crazy” but she loves her mother and respectfully declines judgment. And there, they, were the family three, Sharon, her teenage brother, Spikey, and her father. As Mama continues to go in and out of mental institutions the father, insisting that Mama is reporting to the FBI, turns to alcoholic abuse making Bourbon the Kentucky kind his best friend. At the same time, Brother Spikey struggles with his inner spiritual beliefs. It would take 46 years as she lived daily shackled in a mental hell of her mama’s own pain and suffering. This inter-emotional story defines the reality of living with those who have mental illness and who come from a place of unknowing to finding their own place of knowing. Linda Purl is a genius and on her way to a star unreachable by most others. She has the capable talent and range of many of the classics not bending or giving in to unauthenticity for one moment even whilst under pressure.
